A man on the street smiled at me, making up for yesterday´s unpleasant policeman.
I was riding on a street (strasse in German) that was closed to such.  But, it wasn´t marked so how was I to know.
A policeman stopped me, reprimanded me.  Apologizing in English, it was not accepted!  How come I don´t speak Swiss German, what am I doing here?  When he had gone to the U.K., they insisted he speak English, so I´m guessing this is just tit for tat.  But, governments, policemen, etc., have to realize that money-spending tourists may or may not speak the local language.
One man smiles at you, another scolls you!
Contrasts!
Life!
What to do?
We´re all a part of it, this life!  And seems to me smiling is a better way than scolding.  What the Basel Policeman should have done, is explain about the street closed for the holidays, engaged me in English conversation (which he spoke), motivating me to learn his language.  Maybe a story about it, how it´s different from German German.   I would have left him enlightened, rather than chastized.
We get so few opportunites to inspire people!  DON´T FAIL TO, IF GIVEN THE CHANCE!

The snow flakes flutter, the sleet balls bounce!  The sun shines, and all in one day, 261117, in Basel, Switzerland!
This Sunday morning at Starbucks, crowded at 10.30!  It´s the only one open on Sunday, as near the Bahnhof SBB (RR station).  At first, I had taken the tram further, and had to walk back, to discover the other Starbucks in Centro, closed.  What to do?  I remembered the Starbucks near the RR station open on Sundays, as I´d been there last Sunday.  While walking there it started snowing.
Inside warm and cozy, thank God!
I observe the customers, most online with some device.  There are travellers with their wheeled luggage, a group of locals laughing, mothers with children, hackers.  Little boys run under foot.  The young man opposite me, with his MacBook plugged in, wires everywhere, is engrossed.  Later, I see he´s taking a nap, worn out.  This, a virtual scene!

A picture of Basel, Switzerland, in so many English words…
An old ancient city on the Rhine River, a tri-cultural city made up of Swiss, German, and French.  But,  lucky for me, most speak some English.  Cyril, Swiss born,´ his English very good.
Friedrich Nietzsche taught at the University of Basel.  50 years later, Albert Hoffman invented LSD.  Now, to speculate, if Nietzsche, had used LSD, maybe his end might have been different.
I´ve been here in Basel for two months the guest of Cyril and Teresa with 10-year old Zoe.  Luckily, the living situation has had value for me.  My room, my monk´s cubicle, is three flights above Cyril and Teresa´s.  So, I´ve had privacy, nobody up here on the 5th floor.  And what a good workout, as no elevator — one hundred steps from the front door to my door, most of them up!
I met Cyril and Teresa some five years ago in Santiago, Chile, at the Atacama Hostal.  We only had contact for three days.  Now, so many years later, I cycled to Basel, to be with them again. This, also productive on a material level, a media project entitlted, CAPTAIN HOLLIDAY!  Cyril´s idea!
What are the cliches about Switzerland…?  Where the rich go to play, Davos.  The best chocolate in the world.  Expensive.  Stunning views of the Alps.  Fondue.  Heidi, and `The hills are alive with the Sound of Music.´  William Tell me the truth?  Is Switzerland the best country in the world?
I wouldn´t call Swiss people unfriendly, maybe insular a better Enlgish world!  They´ve managed a good thing for 700 years, so why change?  Yes, there´s the usual, corruption and thievery, but less than other countries.
Yes, it´s expensive to live in Switzerland, but quality costs money!   What fascinates me is that everything works, and all the time.  Where in the world, what country, can you get VERY HOT water out of the tap, almost instantly?  Where?  This is the only country I´ve been in, where everything seems to work, having been well thought out, planned and executed.  SLOWLY, CAREFULLY AND THOROUGHLY!   The Swiss motto!
There´s a big move in Basel City, to increase bicycle traffic, reducing pollution from motor vehicles.  Everybody rides here, old, hatless women, mothers pulling children in trailers.  The motor traffic, dangerous to me, as everyone in such a hurry!  Time is money!  But, the good bicycle infrastructure makes is safer.
This is a part of the European ethos, environment conscioiusness shackled by tha rising Alt-Right.  On one hand bicycle lanes, on the other KEEP THE REFUGEES OUT!   I happy to say Schweiz, better known as Switzerland in Englsh, has done it´s share for the refugees.   It´s countries like Poland and Hungary that are anti help!
I´m writing this in a Starucks Cafe, where one cup and coffee and one muffin costs 12Sfrs.   But, they are the best!
I´ve established another Hutch´s Corner here at this one, near the Bahnhof SBB (Swiss RR Station).  There are three that I know of in Basel City.  There´s Basel Land as well, what we would call the outer communities.  Dornach, the home of the Anthrosposophical Society.  is one.  I cycled out there the first weekend here in Basel.  It was still warm and sunny in October.  Now, the temperatures today in Basel, 0C. and all the WAY UP to 05C.   Nippy, riding a bicycle.
Now, there are something like eight `Hutch´s Corners,´ located around the world.  The first and original was at THE MATE FACTOR in Manitou Springs, Colorado.  Me, Jan, and Victoria, started such at a corner table.  It grew in size until they put a plaque on the wall with our name.  Then came along a new administration, my plaque taken down, and the table changed.  I guess we weren´t Christian enough.
But, now one in Uddevalla, Sweden, just called Yerba´s.  One in Utrecht, The Netherlands.  One in Kathmandu, Nepal.  One in both Lijiang, Yunnan Province, China, and Xinning, Qinghai Province.  Since China, none until Cochabamba, Bolivia.  But, none in Spain.  Now, one in Basel, as mentioned above.
Basel as far as industry goes, has first to do with the River, the Rhine.  Basel has a container port. But, probably the dominate industry is pharmaceuticals.  Both Roche and Novartis, headquaters here. Maybe how LSD was invented by Albert Hoffman.  He was employed at (                 ) and was working on a substance to (                    ).  He had travelled to South America to research hallucnagins, nee result, LSD.  Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds!
There´s also the 555-year old University of Basel, where Friedrich Neitzsche taught in the latter part of the 19th Century.  On wonders if LSD had been available to Neitzsche how his life might have ended differently.
The Rhine River so large (wide), at Basel, long river barges glide up and down it, the low roar of the tug engines vibrating the air.  I´m reminded of Utrecht on the Grand Canal, riding to Amsterdam.  I used to cycle up to Vondel Park, to have coffee and a treat at the Park Cafe. What a scene!  Up and back in one day, almost 100KM, and negotating Amsterdam, with its concentric canals and bridges.  It´s also the home of Heinkken Beer.  Besides beer, young men are interested in prostitutes.  So, they famous RED LIGHT District where prostitutes display their wares openly.   When I was there in 2005, you could purchase marijuana from coffee houses and smoke it there as well.  Now, the conservatives are back in sway, so one step forward and two steps backward.
Here in Basel one day Cyril drove me out to a restored Roman village, complete with a museum.  Of course, one of the local tourist sites.  Photographs at www.cyclingpeace.org/gallery/
Before the Romans were the Celts.  But, who were the Celts?
I enjoy Europe for it´s western history.  Thousands, maybe millions of years of interesting things to discover!
I love learning!
That´s an element of Basel I like, an intellectual feeling in the air, maybe Neitzsche´s ghost howering about.  I may matriculate at the U. of Basel, taking a course in the German language (basics).  Being matriculated affords students many resources like housing.  Shelter, one of the basic needs, for humans, so expensive in Basel City.   For example, a studio apartment, can cost 750SFrs or about $700U.S. dollars.  Cyril, with wife Teresa, and daughter Zoe, live in a five-room flat in a building.  They pay, because Cyril works for Swiss Post, ONLY 1100SFrs, normally 1500SFrs.  But, that´s just THE beginning, with mandatory healthy insurance, food, utilities, they can hardly get by on less than 5KSFrs.  That´s almost $6,000U.S. per month, $72,000U.S. per year!
I wonder what the poor people do in Switzerland…?  There aren´t any poor people!  Certainly not many beggars visible on the street.  I don´t know if they are allowed, or that there are so few.
Switzerland the home of CERN, the world´s largest sub-atomic particle accelerator, smashing quarks together to see what happens.  This almost trillion-dollar facility a group effort of the richer countries.  But, why in Switzerland?  They probably donated the large amount of land required, as the circular underground tunnel, some 30KM in length.  Gotta get the speed of the quarks up, which takes time and distance!
I want to tell them, there is no such thing at time!  Well, maybe space…
Schweiz is the home of the Nestle Corpo., where Charlie Chapin lived, in Vervey (on Lake Geneve).
Geneve, the home of  the European branch of the United Nations (I walked up there.) and UNICEF.  Also, the home of Ale Rizzo, a great www.warmshowers.org host!
It´s a happy Sunday morning here in Starbucks.  My cafe latte grande and blue-berry muffin near perfect.  The hills are alive with the sound of money!
I´ve lived in developing countries like Nepal and Bolivia, and I´ll take the more developed.  I guess I´m spoiled.  But, some sophistication in a culture important to me!
I like going to classical music concerts!
H.

R.M. Rilke…
This was the German poet, I was trying to remember, but confused with Goethe.
My second ex-wife, Gail, studied him at Reed College in the U.S.   Ironically, I got to know her German professior Herr Locher, who would take sabatical from time to time.  He had a house in Italy, north of Genoa, on the coast.  I found it one day, way up in the hillls, on the old ancient Roman road to France.  I remember eating in the village restaurant, so good!  Itally, Rissoto and Tirimasu, ahhhhhhhhhhh!  Vundabar!
FROM RILKE, THE BOOK OF HOURS

What will you do, God, when I die?
When I, your pitcher, broken, lie?
When I, your drink, go stale and dry?
I am your garb, the trade you ply,
Do you lose yourself, when I die?

This, from Rilke interesting…
He understands human existence, as we are how God experiences Materialism.
We live in a dual reality, material form, sensed by our five.
The trick, GET BEYOND, while still in body!

It doesn´t matter close or far, old or new, every human being, including me, is fraught with insecurity, and emotional issues.  There are constant and unending misunderstandings between people who have know each other for years!   How can this be?
We, human beings, we don´t know who we really are, the ego rulling, protecting us, hurt if we´re offended, happy when we´re loved!   Silly beings we are!
I want out of it all, as I know of better worlds.  Most people think this is heaven or hell, but those are here in this life time, not there, on another plane.
Of course, most people don´t understand.  Oh, to find someone who does!

Odd what pops into your mind when older…
They say before you die your life flashes before you… My past has been coming to me fairly regularly recently, so maybe my time is near…?
Remember the old 78 records…?
Do you remember a crooner in the late 40s, early 1950s, named Vaughn Monroe?  AN OLD COWPOKE WENT RIDING OUT ONE DARK AND DUSTY DAY, UPON A  RIDGE HE RESTED AS HE WENT ALONG HIS WAY…
GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY…
Note, just yesterday I remembered these song lyrics from 70 years ago, amazing…
What came to me first was the name of this C/W group, RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE.
Oh, America so different in those days.  We didn´t think, we just accepted and did what religion-culture told us was necessary to live happily ever after!  We went to church and public school, volunteered to serve in the military, got married, beget children, nee trapped in a life of materialism without realizing it.
I was particularly ego stupid!   I wanted to be John Wayne, the hero on a horse.  I wanted to be Steven Spielberg, and be feted for winning an Oscar.  Note, I did manage an Emmy.
Now, look at Trump America, divided, violent, on the brink of revolution.  But, maybe this is good, as one extreme (the ALT RIGHT) always creates its Other.  Already the Demos., are winning elections, the Repubs. on alert.
Trump, a politician, is going to betray his constituency, as they always do what Emma Goldman said:  They paint a Heaven trying to get elected, then deliver Hell, once in office!
Already Trump backpedaling on China.  Running for office last Autumn he constantly berated China over the trade deficit.  Now, in office, he says it´s our fault, the problem is us, and in a way he´s right.  We want to pay less for the things we buy, and China delivered.  We got spoiled!
AN OLD COWPOKE WENT RIDING OUT…

All the things we (humanity) has to do to maintain themselves for just one day…  Amazing, if we counted, in the hundreds, maybe thousands of tasks to keep us going everyday in modern life.
We try to catch the brass ring, riding the merry-go-round!   But, most are flung off trying!
This is why so many people go waco-crazy, as they just can´t deal with it all.  These people retreat into alcohol, opinoids, or whatever they can get.  This numbs the anxiety, making another day possible, or to be discovered as a suicide!
We´re, the world, is spinning out of control!   Maybe this is the periodic switching of the poles, north to south and south to north, or the earth´s wobble.  The earth doesn´t spin perfectly, but wobbles on its axis.  Sometimes this wobble strong enough to cause `natural´  disasters!  Or, in the case of switching pole, MAJOR DISORDER!  Can you imagine.  No aircraft could take off.  No Internet.  Communications in turmoil.  Hope that you are not with the living, if and when this occurs.

What a stunning dawn (sunrise) this morning (221117), in Basel, Schweiz, photographs, herewith…
Lucy in the Basil with diamonds!
Some one needs to put LSD in the water suppy in Basel, Schweiz, maybe all of Schweiz!
The people here in Switzerland, generally good, helpful, even friendly, at least to me.  But, this very morning I had an unpleasant stop by a Basel policia (older male).  I was on a strasse where no bicycles allowed, but not clealy marked.  The guy just wanted to give me some shit.  He insisted I speak Swiss German, here in Basel.  In a way he´s right, but they can´t expect all money-paying tourists to speak their language.  Of course, he let me pass, but he got his way expressing  his repressed dislike of English-speaking tourists.   I´ll bet he was in the U.K. on vacation, and they told him the same, so he´s just reciprocating!
But, there´s too much public subligation of expression here in Schweiz, part of the Swiss cultural zeitgeist.  The Swiss people tend to be xenophobic (not liking foreigners), thus not so open to us.  What the cop should have done, however, is engage me in conversation, and selling me on the idea of learning the German language.  What he did was de-motivate me to learn German.  Then again, the older cops, probably not taught P.R. skills.
About different languages…
Europeans are mostly bilingual especially the younger, older maybe not.  But, trying to learn German as a 78-year old man, daunting.  I would, if I knew I would never leave, but I´m still cycling the world, looking for a place to die, my final home.
Most likely this will not be in Switzerland or Germany, as the climate, not what I prefer.  I need more sun, more warmth.  I need to see the sky, the clouds, not a gray blanket over me!   Too much of the `gray blanket´and I get depressed.  This also has to do with the low barametric pressure associated with low, gray, wet, and green.  I´m a high, dry, blue and brown kind of monk on a bicycle.
I know… I don´t dress like one!
Surprise!
